The
"Cadenza of Words" gives the performer the opportunity to improvise on
materials introduced in the first eight pages of music. The words are,
of course, extracted from the text, thus they have specific musical connotations.
The performer must choose paths: phrases composed of adjacent words. One
should limit repeating these paths more than a few times; rather, the
aim should be to create increasingly more extended and intricate phrases.
Such a trajectory allows one to begin with brief paths which later become
subsumed into longer ones. The performer should not feel restricted by the instrumentation during the Cadenza. This is to say that, while during the first eight pages of music material types (and their associated texts) are instrument-specific, the Cadenza may be approached with relative freedom. Indeed, moving away from the established instrumentation could be considered to be a powerful improvisational avenue for this part of the piece. The performer should allow two to three minutes for the Cadenza. |
