Requiem for Richard’s Knee (1993)
clarinet in B♭
duration: 5’
SMMP No. 105
Premiere
Williams Hall, New England Conservatory of Music, March 1, 1994. Chip Phillips, clarinet
Program Note
When Uncle Richard’s Knee exploded there was great concern in the family. Would he ever play tennis again, or ride his bicycle to work? Would his convalescence allow for more time to practice the clarinet? Such was the lark that inspired this work, which begins almost mournfully, but as it progresses the character traverses through impish humor, quirky athleticism, and ethereal mysticism.
